Super Green Smoothie

In the mornings, I’m often pulling out the blender and whizzing up a yummy smoothie for my breakfast.  It’s a great convenient way of getting a nourishing vitamin and amino acid hit before I leave the house. Leafy greens, apple, ginger, lemon and banana are blended up in my vitamix to form a complete nutrient dense meal. I also like to add a teaspoon of spirulina for added goodness.

A spoonful of Spirulina is an added bonus if you want to add it.  It’s  rich in iodine, which is needed for healthy thyroid for metabolism, and the amino acid tyrosine, which together make up one form of thyroid hormone.

Spirulina is a member of the single-cell blue algae family. It is about 70 percent protein and contains more vitamins, minerals and amino acids than any food. It’s more easily digested and absorbed by the body than any other source of protein. This concentrated form of nutrients is a complete food and one of the best natural sources of beta carotene. Taking powdered Spirulina daily 30 minutes before meals can suppress appetite, as well as support a healthy immune system.

What it’s good for:

This green smoothie is packed with folate for a healthy metabolism and helps to alkalinise the body, creating the perfect environment for your cells to replenish and heal. Apple and banana is packed full of fiber and potassium, to help maintain normal blood pressure and heart function. Flax seed (linseed) contains omega 3 which helps stimulate the secretion of leptin which is a hormone that is produced by cells in the body. Elevated leptin levels help to suppress the appetite and burn stored body fat. A hint of lemon and ginger protects the immune system and support the liver.

Serves 1

Large handful baby spinach leaves
1 whole green apple, chopped with the skin
150 ml fresh apple juice
1 ripe banana (frozen is great )
1 tablespoon flax seed oil or ground linseed
1/2 cup pineapple chopped
juice from 1/2  lemon
1/2  tsp finely chopped ginger
1 teaspoon spirulina

Blend until creamy then enjoy.

Enjoy !

    Hi Teresa,

I don’t have a vitamix blender, just a normal blender which is pretty powerful, but everytime I have the green smoothie it is all clumpy and almost like soup texture so I can never finish it. Could I use a juicer instead to juice the veges and fruit? Will I still get the nutrition I need?

    Thanks
    Michelle
