Hulk Smoothie

Here is a fun super hero way of getting your kids to enjoy their greens !. It was the winning entry from my last “Win a Vitamix Competition” called “THE HULK” smoothie,  submitted by Nicole Valentic who makes it regularly for her 2 twin boys.

Let’s be honest…..Feeding yourself and your kids healthy food is not an easy task and it takes a lot of hard work and effort to bypass most of the processed food and junk in supermarkets theses days.  Being healthy takes dedication and eating the right nutrient dense foods for your activity level and lifestyle is a key ingredient in helping to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure that can start when you’re young. Studies show that the family environment is the main influence on what our children eat, so let’s roll up the sleeves, put on an apron and have some fun in the kitchen.

What it’s good for:
High in protein to build and repair a young growing body and support a healthy immune system. Calcium to build strong bones.  A good source of quality carbs for energy and omega 3 to support brain function.

100g natural thick yoghurt with live cultures
1/2 cup milk  (your choice of organic dairy, soy GMO free, rice, almond, coconut)
1 teaspoon honey
1 handful baby spinach leaves (see note)
1 banana
1 teaspoon ground flaxseed (linseed) or whole chia seed
½ cup ice

Combine the yoghurt, milk, honey, spinach, banana, flaxseed and ice into a blender.
Blend until smooth, green and creamy. I like to use my Vitamix.
Serve immediately and enjoy.

NOTES:

  • 4 x Frozen spinach cubes can be used in place of ice blocks and baby spinach leaves in this recipe.
  • LSA can be used in place of flaxseed or chia.
  • Smoothie boosters such as Healthy Chef Organic Superfood or Pure Protein can be used in this recipe.
  • For a dairy free smoothie use a dairy free milk such as almond or rice milk for this recipe to replace the milk and yoghurt. Alternatively, you can also throw in fruits such as whole peeled oranges, papaya or pineapple + a splash of water if necessary for consistency.

If only I had a blender that would make these, my blender although not very old has trouble even blending up bananas!!!

do they really like it? how green does it taste? – suppose there is one way to find out for sure.

Yes they really do like it!!You really can’t taste the greens,
Try adding a bit more honey if you like, but I don’t
      Think it needs it!
I was lucky enough to win the Vitamix, and I use it
every day,if you can ,save up and buy one ,it can be
      used for so many things.
      From Nicole Valentic :)

    • Janneke!!!! You gotta try it!! I have 4 kids under 7 and they all love it! The best thing is they put in their favourite fruits and the chia seeds are a great hit as well. Hope you like it too! XxDani

I finally tired it! Not all same quantities but the spinach principal. It was fine! or even good :) many more to come, might even share with the family next time. Great way to get extra serve of veg.

I made my first green smoothie this morning with my trusty old bamix. I didn’t offer it to the kids as it was my first foray. With a few tweeks I plan to start offerring it to my kids. Will definitely try this recipe.

Hi, another option is to opt out for the milk and just use a peeled orange cut up, ad half a banana or pineapple. It’s super delicious:big handful English spinach, half a nana, peeled orange, lsa/chia optional but good, and blend.

  5. Angela says:

…and a splash of filtered water to get it blending!

  6. We love our Shrek and HULK green smoothies!!! They taste delicious!!! Even baby Zali who’s just turned one loves them!!! XxDani

    Hi Teresa,
What oil would you recommend for oven roasting chickpeas? Would cold-pressed olive oil or macadamia oil be safe? I’m not not sure what oil to use fir the high heat!
    Thank you :)

I make a smoothie most mornings that my teenage boys won’t touch due to the color. Mine has Pumkin and sesame seeds, crushed linseed, spinach and kale (or sometimes either) and egg, rice milk and a handful of mixed berries. I sometimes add chopped or grated beetroot. Depending on the quantaties aka depending on my mood it can be green, brownie green or as Mr 16 said this morning “mud”. Tastes good and is very satisfying. Enjoy.

  9. Hi Teresa,

Firstly, thanks for your contribution to wellbeing through food. I love your recipes and have started preparing them for family and friends who are surprised and delighted by the flavours and nutritional benefits.

Hubby and I love the Hulk smoothie. I add coconut water as a substitute for milk and this morning, prepared it with banana and mango cheek (as I only had one narna) and it was scrum-diddly-umptious!

Thanks again and please continue your fabulous work.

    Anna.

    Hi Teresa,

Thanks for this site I use it all the time and tell others about it.

I just made this smoothie, well actually I was in the process of making ‘a smoothie’ then wanted to know if you put pysllium husk or lecithin granules in YOUR smooties, so THEN I referred to your site (AGAIN).

I acutally put 2 nanans, a cup of blue berries (I went blueberry picking over the hols), saome pawpa, a type of green spinich, teaspoon of ground flaxseeds, plyllium husk, lecithin granuals, powdered carob, & chia seeds. I used rice milk and 4 ice cubes.
(If someone gave me this I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t milk and didn’t have the yogurt). I didn’t feel the need to add the honey.

This was sooooo yummie. I am going for a 2 hour bike ride so didn’t want something too heavy prior but wanted the energy I get from smoothies. This does it for me and my 2 dogs loved it as well, albeit they only had a small amount ( half a cup).

Thanks again Teresa keep up the good work it is very much appreciated for sure :)
