YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO MATCHA GREEN TEA

Samurai warriors used to drink matcha for sustained energy and focus in battle. Buddhist monks drink this tea before meditation for its calming properties.  This is why I love matcha so much, it’s both calming and energising at the same time. It’s also an essential part of my daily morning ritual. I can’t perform or function properly without it.

This is because matcha is my ultimate morning pick me up that’s similar to coffee… it boosts my mood and elevates my energy, but without the rush of caffeine you get from coffee. Unlike coffee that gives you a quick energy spike and releases the stress hormone cortisol, matcha provides a steady and sustained energy boost throughout the day. It has around 70 milligrams of caffeine, as opposed to 100 milligrams in a regular-sized black coffee, and it releases the caffeine over a longer period of time.

WHAT IS MATCHA GREEN TEA?

There are two main classifications of matcha: Ceremonial Grade and Food (culinary) Grade. Healthy Chef uses Organically Grown Ceremonial Grade Matcha. Food-grade matcha is generally used in cafes or in cooking and is made from the mature leaves of the green tea plant – the antioxidant profile is not as high as Ceremonial Grade Matcha.

Organic Ceremonial-Grade Matcha uses the younger leaves of the green tea plant and it’s what I love to drink because it has a a much higher antioxidant profile and offers a smoother flavour compared to food grade matcha. The green leaves of Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha are hand-picked, steamed, dried and ground into the finest green tea powder available. When you make it, you mix the powder with hot water so, essentially, you are drinking the entire leaf.

I love my matcha just simply made with hot water. I sometimes add a generous splash of hot almond or coconut milk if I’m craving for something creamier and satisfying.

If you’re not familiar with this beautifully energising green drink, think of it as a very potent form of green tea that comes from the same plant, but grown and prepared very differently. For this reason, matcha has up to ten times more antioxidants than regular green tea.

Ceremonial Grade Organic Matcha is high in antioxidants and recognised as the highest quality matcha tea in the world as it uses the finest young leaves of the green tea plant.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF MATCHA?

Matcha gives you energy, supports weight loss and boosts your immune system. You can view the studies HERE. Matcha also contains L-theanine, a unique amino acid, that helps promote a relaxed state.

I love Ceremonial Grade Matcha because it also supports my adrenals and how my body reacts to stress. For my own personal health journey, matcha is key to keeping my cortisol and insulin levels low.

HOW TO DRINK TRADITIONAL MATCHA WITH WATER

Matcha is traditionally made with a tea whisk and scoop which is roughly around 1/2 teaspoon per scoop. Pour in 1 cup of hot or cold water over the matcha powder (matcha doesn’t dissolve in water, it’s just “suspended within the water”, so the temperature of the water can be hot or cold). Whisk quickly in a zig-zag motion until little bubbles start to form. Continue whisking until all of the clumps are broken up and the top of the tea is covered with a thin layer of foam. This takes about a minute. If you don’t have a tea whisk, just use small wire whisk or shake it up in your blender bottle. It’s wonderful in coconut water or just water and lime as a refreshing drink before or after a workout.

STEP 1:
Scoop 1/2 teaspoon Healthy Chef Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha into a drinking bowl.

STEP 2:
Pour 3 tablespoons of hot water into the bowl. Mix with the matcha whisk until you form a smooth emerald green paste, then add 1 cup of hot water.

STEP 3:
Whisk quickly in a zig-zag formation until little bubbles start to form. Continue whisking until all of the clumps are broken up and the top of the tea is covered with a thin layer of foam. This takes about a minute.

STEP 4:
Sip slowly and enjoy the amazing health benefits of Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha.

HOW TO DRINK HOT MATCHA LATTE OR ICED MATCHA LATTE
Pour in 1 cup of hot almond milk or drinking coconut milk over 1 teaspoon of Healthy Chef Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha. Whisk quickly in a zig-zag motion until little bubbles start to form. Continue whisking until all of the clumps are broken up and the tea is covered with a thin layer of foam. This takes about a minute.

For an iced matcha latte, combine 1 teaspoon of Healthy Chef Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha with 1  1/2 cups of almond milk or drinking coconut milk and 1/2 cup of ice.  Shake it up in your blender bottle.  Pour in a glass over ice and enjoy. Sweeten with a little stevia, if preferred.

STEP 1:
Scoop  1/2 – 1 teaspoon Healthy Chef Organic Ceremonial Grade Matcha into a drinking bowl. The more matcha you use, the stronger the brew. I recommend starting with 1/2 teaspoon and then adjusting according to your taste – add more matcha for a stronger brew.

STEP 2:
Pour 2 – 3 tablespoons of hot milk into the bowl (use your choice of milk – we love full cream dairy or coconut milk). Mix with the matcha whisk until you form a smooth emerald green paste, then top up with 1 cup of hot milk.
